The new album from Brazilian musician MYMK (Bruno Sres), Crack A Light is released 4th February 2022 through Sounds et al as both a vinyl, and digital album.
Crack A Light is a record of restrained electronic compositions. Recorded in an intimate studio setting through a process of self-erected barriers, and challenges presented by the COVID pandemic. An attempt to focus creative attention, and explore new paths.
“Throughout my work, I’ve been trying to create more hurdles for myself, attempting to curb certain indulgent expressions that can come through uninvited.” – MYMK
During the global lockdown, Sres was able to work long hours in the studio, using rehearsal days to dive into ideas organically, eschewing his normal notation practice and relying on memory and impulse to lead the compositions in new directions. “No matter what barriers you put between yourself, the process, and the final output, the work will still completely expose you in the end. My music refers to the most vivid aspects of life, and it is this concept that I’m exploring within Crack A Light.” – MYMK
In contrast to the individualized recording process, the project as a whole is one of collaboration. The album is preceded by a single (A Gesture / Like All Mornings) that includes a video from visual artist Indira Dominici, and the album features the artwork of Italian photographer Jasmine Deporta.
“As soon as I saw Jasmine’s work, I immediately knew that it was perfect for this project. It alludes to different emotions working together, and also clashing with each other. Ideas that I was trying to explore through the music. There’s a narrative quality to her photography, as though she’s looking for a specific atmosphere, an environment that can create something akin to a dream, or a memory.” – MYMK
